A “rumble on the river” is shapingup in the US thermal coal industry, as more NorthernAppalachia coal could move down the Ohio River to competewith Illinois Basin coal, an Energy Ventures Analysisconsultant said Friday.Increased production from Murray Energy’s NAPP mines,partly to offset costs stemming from the company’s acquisitionof several former Consol mines in the region, couldlead to “lots of competition” between Northern Appalachiaand the Illinois Basin, Emily Medine, a principal withArlington, Virginia-based Energy Ventures Analysis, saidat the Platts Coal Properties & Investment conference inHollywood, Florida.
