Adaptive strategies of homosporous helophytic and hydrophytic ferns

Based on a study of helophytic and hydrophytic ferns, as well as literature data, adaptive strategies of their sporophytes are identified. A complex analysis of the photosynthetic apparatus of the plants is carried out at different levels of its organization: (a) fronds, (b) mesophyll cells, and (c) plastid apparatus. Among these species, there is a selection of plants characterized by various biomorphs, active vegetative reproduction, and accelerated passing of ontogenetic phases. As a result, structures promoting aeration, the maintenance of an optimum water balance, and effective photosynthesis appear.
