Trends in global vinyl & chlor-alkali industries offer India a window of opportunity

The challenges faced by the Indian chlor-alkali industry are well known to the readers of this column, having been the subject of several opinion pieces. The recently held 'World Chlor-alkali Conference' in Bangkok offers yet another opportunity to retook the dynamics of this industry which is seeing a resurgence in production in North America; a slowdown in demand and capacity build-up in China; and tariff barriers in India impacting the pattern of trade. The industry seems to be stuck in a groove in much of the developed world and in China. In contrast, India seems to be a bright spot, and a market several players are eyeing.
