Leaders of the G8 industrialized nations, at a summit held earlier this month in L'Aquila, Italy, agreed to cut their countries' greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80% by 2050. G8 leaders hope that the cuts will lead to a worldwide reduction in GHG emissions of 50% by 2050, including cuts made by developing countries. Tfiey also announced a target to limit the overall impact of global warming to a rise in the average world temperature of 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. G8 nations agreed one year ago on a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050, but European Union negotiators have since pressed for tougher emission cuts.
