The U.S. FDA has announced that it is taking steps to establish quality inspection offices in China covering foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. The move follows numerous health-related incidents in the U.S. in the last year, associated with foodstuffs and pharma products suspected to have been imported from China. The European Commission has separately begun a consultation exercise, under which it is inviting ideas from the public on how best to amend existing European Union (EU) regulations to ensure the safe manufacture, trade, sale, and distribution of active pharma ingredients (API) and pharmaceuticals.
