Neutropenia is often categorized as mild, moderate, or severe on the basis of the ANC. Mild neutropenia corresponds to an ANC between 1000 and 1500/uL; moderate, between 500 and 1000/uL; and severe, less than 500/uL. The risk of infection begins to increase at an ANC below 1000/uL. Neutrophil counts may be lower in some ethnic and racial groups, such as African Americans, Africans, and Yemenite Jews.1 Neutropenia may be acute or chronic (of more than 3 months' duration) depending on the length of the illness.
