Core Values Lead Us to the Core of the Enterprise

I ran a business as a first career, and Ihave brought several beliefs along with meinto the information profession. Perhaps hav-ing a board of directors, a monthly profit/lossstatement, and a balance sheet helped me vi-sualize our core business in a concrete andclear fashion. Those first-career lessons Ilearned boil down to three guiding beliefs Ihave about organizations and people. Noneof the three would break new ground inHarvard Business Review—but perhaps theybear mentioning in these pages. First, cus-tomers change with the times, and effectivebusinesses are changing with them. Second,staff within organizations can resist change,but this urge can be overcome through build-ing trust and clear communication. And fi-nally: Any business that wants to keep thedoors open has to make a 100% commitmentto using every technological advantage thatcomes to market.
