Pipe resonance in the tread grooves at the tire contact area is a major factor in the generation of tire/road noise. To examine this point, two kinds of experiments were carried out. In the first, the effect of the road surface on the piperesonance was examined using a simplified model of a tread groove. As a result, it was found that pipe resonance in the tread groove significantly contributes to tire/road noise in the case of a dense asphalt concrete pavement, whereas the contributionis considerably less in the case of a porous asphalt concrete pavement. Next, the pipe resonance in the groove of a tire under actual rolling conditions was examined and it was confirmed that this phenomenon occurs in the tread groove of an actualrolling tire.
