The Russian food and processing industry: achievements and problems.

The Russian food and processing industry currently incorporates around 25 000 enterprises, including 5300 large- and medium-sized enterprises. This sector employs approximately 1.5 million people. If operating results for recent years are analysed, it can be observed that the most sectors in the food and processing industry have adapted to market conditions, and since 2002, production volumes have increased for most main food types. In 2003, the food industry accounted for 15.1% of Russian industrial output, while food products accounted for 46.2% of retail trade in 2003. Price trends for foods in 2002-2003 are noted, and data for the outputs of the main segments of the food and processing industries in 2002-2003 are tabulated. The main trends in 2002-2003 are identified for the following sectors: meat; dairy; milling and baking; fats and oils; sugar; brewing; soft drinks and mineral waters; and liqueurs and vodka products. For each of these sectors, discussion covers: raw material suppliers; production volumes; main players; and particular issues facing each sector.
