Effects of monochromatic light on growth and development of the clawed frog Xenopus laevis larvae [Russian]

The clawed frog Xenopus laevis larvae were grown (from the beginning of their active feeding to transformation into young of the current year) in aquariums (planting density is 3 specimens/l, n = 100) under action of monochromatic light. Red (predominant transmission spectrum is 680-760 mmu), green (510-540), light-blue (440-500) and blue (430-470 mmu) light zones were used. The tadpoles grew and developed better under green and blue illumination. Red light suppressed their development and decreased the growth of larvae at their later stages as well as increased their mortality and variation of sizes. The duration of the larva development was reduced under green and light-blue illumination in the third of fourth days and increased under red one. The young tadpoles of the current year, which developed under light-blue and green illumination, were larger (by 13.5% compared to the control variant); the size of the tadpoles developed under red light were smaller. Other spectral zones did not cause any changes in the development of the larvae. Mechanisms of affecting the monochromatic light on the development of X. laevis are discussed.
