The incidence of thyroid cancer has risen in recent years. In the United States, the incidence increased at an annual rate of 5.4% in men and 6.5% in women from 2006 to 2010. Whether this increase represents a true rise in incidence—or early discovery of sub-clinical disease—is a matter of discussion. Early diagnoses of subclinical disease are also becoming more common throughout the world.2 This increase has generated significant interest in the management of thyroid cancer.
