Decision-centered visualization: time-critical situation awareness and decision making

There are numerous complex application domains in which human users must make time-critical, high-risk decisions, often under conditions of high workload. Air traffic control, military command and control, emergency management, and the control of complex plants such as nuclear power generators or large commercial transport aircraft are obvious examples. In such situations, human users do not have the luxury of time either to interactively specify an information presentation, or describe to a human operator what to display and how to display it.
