摘要

This paper describes a novel video coding scheme targeting for low bit-rate applications. The scheme combines a motion compensation (MC) method with a waveform coding method called matching pursuits (MP) in a common framework of iterative operations. At each iteration, both methods are tested temporarily and the better one, which minimizes a rate-distortion cost, is alternatively carried out. Accordingly, MC and MP can be conducted in appropriate order and quality of the reconstructed image is gradually improved. This nature allows us accurate rate control by stopping the iteration at arbitrary point. Parameters needed for decoding operations are adaptively entropy coded using amultisymbol arithmetic coder. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme attains up-to 1.2 dB higher SNR than the H.264/AVC standard while allowing flexible rate control.
