Photocatalytic coating materials that are used to keep products in beautiful condition are now being actually applied or tested at various places. The surface of photocatalyst applied products produce a self-cleaning effect such as by rain when exposed to the light. However, such effect being the result of organic degradation, the life of coated surface is considerably reduced unless such materials are used in combination with more durable coating materials. A contamination preventing coating material has been developed by combining inorganic coating materials and TiO{sub}2 photocatalyst. Since 90% of this new material are composed of an inorganic component, the coated surface will not decompose by photocatalysis even when combined with the photocatalyst. The structural composition of this material meets the requirement of the photocatalytic coating material. This paper describes the characteristics and basic properties of the coating material and test results on the stain-proof property and gas decomposition property by checking the coated surface before and after applying the ultraviolet radiation. Manifestation of the photocatalytic property is related with the decomposition of the surface functional group. Selection of such functional group is found to be very important.
