The Advanced Material Gas-Generator (AMG) R&D Project was initiated in 1993 as a ten-year project funded jointly by the Japan Key Technology Center and the fourteen participating domestic companies. The objectives of the project are to developtechniques for manufacturing advanced materials and to design and test the components of a gas generator. The three main technological targets of the project are to produce a gas generator that weighs 50% less, uses 20% less fuel, and emits 70% lessNO{sub}x than its most refined counterpart as of 1993.As our contribution to the project we studied the use of a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) as the combustor liner with the aim of developing the combustor, which is one of the components of a gas generator. We confirmed the appropriateness of using theselected a SiC{sup}F SiC ceramic matrix composite as the combustor liner through the process of evaluating the CMC combustor liner produced on trial on the combustion test, and by performing thermal stress analysis of model CMC liners.
