摘要

The techniques of extended intersecting beams and optical spectroscopy were employed to investigate the excitation of the presumed laser levels of Fe I and Fell in electron-atom collisions. The total excitation cross sections for the z{sup}5P{sub}3{sup}o, x{sup}5D{sub}4{sup}o and z{sup}5F{sub}5{sup}o levels of atomic iron were determined. Measurements were made of the excitation cross sections for transitions arising from the odd levels of Fe II with an excitation energy ranging from 38000 to 48000 cm{sup}(-1) relative to the ground level of Fe II.
