Suma Aqualife Park is conducting researches of finless porpoises in the Eastern Inland Sea of Japan for conservation purpose. Aerial and sea surface surveys revealed that the density of finless porpoise tends to be higher in northern Harima-nada than that in the southern area. Reports from skippers and fishermen suggested that there are four high density waters of finless porpoises in south of Kansai Air Port, off Kakogawa, off Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture, Ushimado in Okayama Prefecture, and Awashima-Island of Kagawa Prefecture. Data of stranded animals, 21 finless porpoises were found during April 2010 to June 2013 in the focal area. Further monitoring and study of finless porpoises will reveal the role of this species in the eco-system in Eastern Inland Sea and encourage public aware of this coastal key species.
