摘要

The mystery of Lake Baikal opens with the name. Who did name the lake "Baikal?" What does the name mean? Scientists assume that an inexistent Turkic aborigine "kurykane" gave the name to this ancient lake, and the meaning of "Baikal" is a lake of plentiful life. The first Russian discoverer of Lake Baikal is Kurbat Ivanov, who was a Cossack platoon commander, succeeded in arrival at the western lakeside in 1643.
