The Administration of President Barack Obama has pursued an "all-of-the-above" strategy to accelerate the development of a clean energy economy in the United States that will create jobs and reduce U.S. carbon emissions. In keeping with this initiative, the U.S. Department of Energy's Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program engages in comprehensive efforts to enable the widespread commercialization of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies across the country. These technologies offer a critical pathway for sustaining the transportation and power sectors on clean energy in a manner that is complementary to other clean technologies, like batteries, and that is flexible enough to utilize diverse fuel supplies. With the release of the first fuel cell electric vehicles, 2015 was a landmark year for the industry. In the U.S., the Congress established the first National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day on October 8th, the Pro gram launched the $ 1 Million H2 Refuel H-Prize, demonstrated the world's first fleet of hydrogen fuel cell airport ground support equipment, established several national-laboratory-led consortia in key research and development (R&D) areas, and supported the H2USA public-private partnership through the national laboratories to develop financial assessment tools for hydrogen infrastructure. This report details these broad accomplishments of the DOE FCTO as well as recent program-level accomplishments.
