Biofuels-Stepping Stone to a Clean Energy Future

Biofuels and conventional fossil fuels differ only in terms of time — both ultimately afise from living organisms. Fossil fuels derived from plants make up coal, and tiny sea creatures that died millions of years ago become oil and gas after having been trapped in geological strata, both producing the rich deposits we so readily exploit for energy today. Gaseous carbon dioxide (CO_2), a by-product of combusted stored carbon, is an essential atmospheric gas needed to trap solar infrared radiation and maintain a surface temperature suitable for life.
