A type of membrane element or shell element isgenerally used in analyses of the large plastic deformation of athin shell, such as in sheet metal forming, by the finite-elementmethod. Although the membrane element is fairly efficient incomputation, it sometimes gives poor results. In contrast theshell element gives a comparatively good solution but at a highcalculation cost. We propose the use of a simplifiedaxisymmetric shell element which adds concentrated bendingstiffness into the membrane element. After implementing theformulation, classical elasticity problems and bulge problems ofa circular tube described in literature are analyzed. Throughcomparisons of those numerical results with the classicalsolutions, the measured values and the results obtained using theshell element embedded in the general-purpose programsABAQUS and MARC, the effectiveness of this method is verified.
