The method involves pressing pressure element (2) against the convex side of the smooth shell (1) and against polygonally arranged support elements. The support elements (4) are contacted with region of the shell. The space is formed between shell and supporting elements. The convexly curved shell shape is formed into concave curved shell regions (10) by impingement of the pressure element. The concave curved shell regions are moved against supporting element tool (5) so as to create pressure membrane stresses in shell.
