Atherosclerosis is accelerated in diabetes and accounts for the increased mortality and morbidity in the diabetic population. Statins have been suggested to reduce cardiovascular risk in part independent of their lipid lowering properties, hi this study we have investigated the anti-atherosclerotic effects of the novel HMG CoA reductase inhibitor, rosuvastatin, on diabetes accelerated atherosclerosis, the diabetic apoE KO mouse, a model that has previously been reported to be resistant to HMG CoA reductase treatment. Furthermore, we have compared it to a treatment involving interruption of the RAS, an approach that we previously have shown is anti-atherosclerotic in this model.
