A welding monitoring system named iL Viewer has been developed. In this system, decreasing image brightness and illuminating the dark area around the extremely bright welding point with a second harmonic pulse YAG laser can observe the welding situation clearly on a monitor, even during especially luminous welding phenomena, such as laser welding. Using this system, a seam tracking control system was developed for laser welding by analyzing the images to distinguish the position of the seam line and to conduct the feedback control. Using this system, the welding torch can track the groove line adequately under practical laser welding conditions, including welding speed and amount of gap between groove line and teaching point.
