Oita Stadium 'Big Eye' in the Oita Sports Park

Oita Stadium called "Big Eye" located in the Oita Sports Park was completed in March 2001 after three years of construction work. This studium was designed by Kisho Kurokawa Architect & Associates. The area is about 14,000 m~2. About 80 ton. of titanium was used as the architectual materials for this stadium. Sincs the location of this Oita Sports Park is adjacent to the Bongo Channel, corrosion resistant materials against sea water like titanium were needed as architectual materials. The roof of this stadium was made of titanium plate 0.4 mm thickness. The roof was made by using seam welding process. In this paper the concept why the titanium was selected as roofing materials is described.
