Accumulated knowledge derived from studies related to pressure ulcer management has changed clinical practice and led to the improved quality of nursing and medical care.Awareness of these conditions is attributed to the dedicated and progressive activities of Wound, Ostomy,and Continence Nurses (WOCNs) at the end of the last century.This article reviews their nursing care and describes its related evidence including the exploration of pressure ulcer pathogene-sis,risk assessment, and prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers.The deep-tissue injury under the intact skin is an important concept that explains the rapid deterioration of stage I pressure ulcers. Risk assessment scales used by the WOCNs as part of the reference information for preventive nursing interventions are described.Preventive strategies including mattresses and dressings are also described.We introduced the valuable options of treatment of intractable pressure ulcers including negative pressure wound therapy and peri-wound skin cleansing.Innovative technologies based on nursing research will overcome the challenges for the assessment, prevention,and treatment of pressure ulcers.
