For the purpose of improvement of productivity, welding in the shipbuilding industry has been automated in various ways. And since the last decade, some welding processes, particularly in sub - assembly and assembly stage, have already beenrobotized.In these robot welding systems, the information for robot movement and welding is generated from manual input data and actual teaching.On the other hand, it becomes possible to define hull models to be three - dimensional product models by introducing three - dimensional CAD system.And it comes to be available that computers automatically generate robot NC data using design data from three - dimensional CAD system, that is to say, CAM in shipbuilding.In this paper, welding robot system for sub - assembly in shipbuilding using design data from 3- dimensional CAD system is introduced, which is completed in KHI Sakaide Works.
