Radiation characteristics of the dielectric slab antenna, which has been proposed as a high efficiency antenna at millimeter-wave band, are discussed. The antenna consists of the metal strip array etched on the surface of the dielectric slab, and is located in front of a metal plate reflector to obtain the uni-directional performance. In this paper, the characteristic equation of the metal reflector backed dielectric slab waveguide has been derived at first as the basis of this antenna, and the transmission characteristics have been calculated to optimize the antenna performance. Next consideration is given to the calculation of the radiation characteristics by using electromagnetic field simulator. The dimensions of the metal strip array as well as the dielectric slab have been investigated to obtain the uniform aperture distribution.
