ZL-RED mechanism for fairness improvement between TCP Reno and Vegas

TCP Vegas version is expected to achieve higher throughput than TCP Tahoe and Reno versions, which are currently used in the Internet. However, we have revealed that when the traditional TCP Reno connections and TCP Vegas connections co-exist in the network, the throughput of TCP Vegas connections degrades significantly. In this paper, we propose ZL-RED (Zombie Listed RED), which memorizes flow informations of recently arrived packets in a fixed size table, and use the table to decide the discarding probabilities of arriving packets, to improve fairness between TCP Reno connections and TCP Vegas connections. We show the effectiveness of ZL-RED through some simulation experiments.
