Multiple cases of abortion and stillbirth in cows caused by Ibaraki virus.

44 cases of abortion and stillbirth occurred in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, between September and October 1997. Neutralizing antibody to Ibaraki virus (IBAV) was detected in 81.8% of affected cows, and 14 virus strains were isolated from blood samples, placenta and fetal brain using HmLu-1 cell culture. Seven cows with dysphagia were shown to have neutralizing antibody to IBAV, and 2 IBAV virus strains were isolated from blood cells and characterized using physico-chemical and serological analyses.
