The use of controlled release progestagen products in embryo transfer programmes is considered essential if predictable synchronisation of recipients with donors is to be achieved. The aim of recipient synchronisation is to time the oestrus onset of the recipient animal with the oestrus onset of the superovulated donor animalto facilitate effective transfer at a later date. The CIDR insert (InterAg, New Zealand) is an intravaginal progesterone releasing product that is widely used in this regard, Oestrous synchronisation programmes utilising the CIDR insert in combination with oestradiol and prostaglandin have been shown to deliver very precise oestrous onset patterns with high fertility. The CIDR insert has also shown application in donor superovulation programmes where it allows operators to initiate superovulation protocols without observing base heats and allows a group of donors to :be synchronised for ease of management. In addition exogenous progesterone support from the CIDR insert has been found by some operators to enhance embryo survival, particularly frozen embryos, when administered to recipient animals at the point of transfer.
