In recent years, the introduction of foreign genes into many crop and forage plants by gene transfer techniques has become commonplace. Efficient application of these techniques has necessitated the development of reliable in vitro regeneration techniques. These same in vitro regeneration methods provide the means for performing a myriad of genetic and genomic manipulations such as inducement of herbicide resistance, the increasing of genetic variability and alteration of chromosome number or ploidy
