40 chickens, 8 days old, were divided into 10 groups and fed for 2 weeks on diets containing partially hydrolysed guar gum and guar gum (GG) in the ratios 0:40, 10:30, 20:20, 30:10 or 40:0 (g/kg diet) with phytase 0 or 500 units/kg. Although liveweight gain improved with dietary phytase, it decreased in a dose-dependent manner as dietary GG increased. Weight and tibial calcium content were not influenced by dietary phytase, but decreased with increasing dietary GG. Ash and phosphorus concentrationsin the tibia improved with phytase treatment. It is concluded that while dietary phytase improves growth of chickens, dietary GG is not effective in improving its efficacy.
