A consideration on the traditional beekeeping of Japanese honey-bee (Apis cerana Fabricius) in Tsushima Island, Kyushu, Japan

Traditions and equipment relating to beekeeping was surveyed in Tsushima island Kyushu, Japan. Various types of beekeeping equipment were found although many had common features, especially the shape of the workers' gate. In one village, beekeepingequipment had significance as a religious symbol. Many customs surround the keeping of native bees in Japan and are an important element of the Shouyou-jurin culture.
