Review: Appreciative inquiry: a strength-based research approach to building Canadian public health nursing capacity

Monsieur Jourdain, famously exclaimed 'Par ma foi, il y a plus de quarante ans que je dis de la prose, sans que j'en susse rien' - he had not realised that for 40 years he had been speaking in prose. Similarly there is an inevitable feeling when considering a method such as appreciative enquiry that many of us have been using the approach for a long time without realising it. In some respects this is a particular problem in this context because advocates of appreciative enquiry see it as a strength of the approach that it is difficult to be too specific about the details of what is the process of appreciative enquiry, which to some extent reduces the clarity of what is being evaluated in this study. This paper reports a study of a study - it assesses the success of the wider study on the development of public health nursing. It uses other research methods to assess this research method.
