The importance of the value proposition for IR

An article by Beheshti and Meek (1) on the costs associated with conventional chemoembolization appears in this month's issue of JVIR. It is an important article that documents the value of an interventional radiology (IR) procedure. In the article, the authors determine the costs incurred from the hospital perspective during conventional chemoembolization procedures. Conclusions from their study demonstrate that consumable items, which account for greater than 60% of the overall cost of the procedure, are the most costly variable. Other variables, including the hourly cost of the angiography suite, which the authors calculated with very robust methodology, pale surprisingly with the other variable costs.
