MAINTENANCE of Certification (MOC) is a relatively new program-offered by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) that radiologists will be required to participate in if they "wish to remain board certified. It is a comprehensive approach to learning, assessment, and performance improvement. This process applies to all time-limited certificates (TLCs) both in general radiology (for those who passed their boards in 2002 or later) and in all subspecialty certificates. Although diplomates with lifetime certificates in general diagnostic radiology (DR) are technically off the hook, they are being strongly encouraged to participate. Those who have certificates in vascular and interventional radiology (ViR) must participate if they wish to remain subspecialty certified, because all VIR certificates are time limited and need to be renewed every 10 years. It is important to realize that the MOC process is being mandated for all physicians in all specialties, not just radiology.
