Haemato-biochemical changes in Hepatozoon canis infected dog before and after therapeutic management

Of 55 dogs, reported at Referral Veterinary Polyclinic, IVRI, Bareilly from March to June, 2010, only 3 dogs showed Hepatozoon canis infection and among them, one was co-infected with Ehrlichia canis. The affected dogs were between 8 months to 7 years. The blood examination revealed gametocytes of H. canis with 4-9% parasitaemia of the circulating neutrophils. The haemogram revealed a moderate anaemia and neutrophilic leukocytosis. Serum biochemical analysis indicated increase in ALP, ALT, globulin,BUN and creatinine and decrease in total protein and albumin. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) level was high whereas SOD level was lower. The dogs were responded to treatment with oxytetracycline within 72 hours.
