Radiocesium (~(137)Cs) is a relatively abundant, long-lived (t_(1/2) = 30.0 years) radionuclide which has a high degree of food chain transport (Whicker and Schultz, 1982). The fallout ~(137)Cs that gets deposited on the vegetation may reach the humandiet through the fodder-cow-milk pathway. Studies have been carried out to assess the ~(137)Cs levels in green grasses, hay and silages contaminated from the Chernobyl accident fallout (Bertilsson et al., 1988; Ward et al., 1989; Hansen and Hove, 1991 and Belli et al., 1993). However, very few studies have been carried out on the assessment of ~(137)Cs levels in grass and paddy straw samples from a natural environment. Hence, this study was carried out to assess and compare the ~(137)Cs concentrationsin these samples.
