The objective of this research is to examine and compare the total lipid and HUFA content of rotifers Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia enriched with SDE (spray-dried-enrichments), LA, or concentrated algae paste (CAP). Another objective is to determine if CAP, is effective at enriching rotifers and Artemia with HUFA as LA. Seven enrichments were evaluated, three were SDEs, two were species of CAP, and two were species of LA. The fatty acid composition of the various enrichments reported were then analysed. Six replicates were set up for each enrichment treatments in 1-L glass beakers, aerated through 5-cm airstones. The amount of arachidonic acid (ARA) was greatest in ARA enrichment media (37.6%) and ranged from 0 to 3.4% in the remaining enrichments. CAPN contained the highest levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 30.6%), while the remaining enrichments contained <1.5% EPA. Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) was present only in the ALG (10.7%), CAPI (1.6%), and LAI (0.7%) enrichments. AQ contained the most docosahexaenoic acid (DHA;43.8%) followed by ALG (27.0%), CAPI (11.5%) and LAI (7.5%). In summary, both the SDEs and the CAPs provided very good enrichment of rotifers and Artemia that were generally superior in HUFA concentrations to the LA evaluated..
