A health risk assessment of the South African mining industry: current and future projects

The paper represents a particular element in amuch wider project commissioned by SIMRAC(Safety in MinesResearch Advisory Committee) i.e. SIMRISK 401. The primaryobjective of this project was to assist SIMRAC to developstrategic directions most appropriate to improve health and safetyin the South African mining industry through research anddevelopment. The priority health hazards facing South Africanmining industry are : (1) noise; (2) silica dust; (3) heat; (4)asbestos; (5) aspects of bio-mechanical factors(poor ergonomics) and vibration.
