The approximately 970 volunteer rescuebrigadesman serving the South African mining industryare largely drawn from full-time occupations frommin-management. This implies that by the nature of theirdaily jobs they are uncaccustomed to the extremephysical demands required during rescue and firefighting operations. The combination of high work ratesin harsh environmental conditions, coupled with veryhigh motivational levels, therefore poses a threat tothe health and safety of these workers. This paperexamines the physiological protection of rescuebridagesman with specific reference to the scientificdevelopment of work load tests.
