Post harvest sorting and grading of fruits is a difficult and labour intensive component of the commercial fresh fruit market. Although mechanical equipments are available to perform operations like sorting and grading of fruits, manual effort is still indispensable. Typically people are positioned along the packing lines, sorting by visual inspection as the fruit passes on a conveyor belt and mechanical sorting is limited to size sorting. Manual sorting is costly and unreliable since human judgment in identifying the multiple varying parameters is inconsistent, subjective and slow. CEERI Chennai Centre has developed a machine vision system for automatic sorting and grading of fruits employing image processing as a tool.
