This paper presents the design and development of rectangular microstrip antenna (RMSA) for dual band operation by inserting the novel slots on conventional rectangular patch. The enhancement of impedance bandwidth of dual band operation is achieved by inserting interconnected slots. This antenna provides an impedance bandwidth of 29.83%. However, 34% of impedance bandwidth can be achieved by inserting parallel slots used along the non-radiating edges, truncating the corners and by using open stub slot along the width of the conventional RMSA. The enhancement of impedance bandwidth does not affected the nature of broadside radiation characteristics. The design concept of antennas is described and experimental results are discussed. The proposed antennas may find applications in synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
