In this article, a fuzzy model is developed for intelligent ignition timing control of IC engines. It is well-known that the optimum ignition timing, which gives the Maximum Brake Torque (MBT)for a given engine design, varies with the rate of flame development and propagation in the cylinder. This depends, among other factors, on engine design and operating conditions, the properties of the fuel/air mixture, etc. In most present-day engines, ignition timing has generally been controlled by fixed open-loop schedules, as functions of engine speed, load and coolant temperature. It is desirable that the ignition time can be adjusted to the optimum level, which produces the best torque to obtain minimum fuel consumption and maximum available power. The model is implemented using fuzzy logic toolbox of MATLAB5.1 for an ignition timing control system based on fuzzy logic theory. The results obtained using Fuzzy inference system provide important information for intelligent control of ignition timing of internal combustion engines.
