Soil Health Management - A Key for Sustainable Production

India's population is projected to reach 1.4 billion by 2025. This will lead to an increase in the demand for food grains (about 300 million tonnes), vegetables, fruits and animal products. This increase in demand has to be met from the fixed arable land available (= 141 million ha), with less scope for further horizontal expansion, out of which 120 million ha is estimated to be suffering from different forms of land degradation (ICAR and NAAS 2010). A large chunk of the total population (58%) of our country depends on agriculture for their principal means of livelihood and in-spite of that the share of agriculture in the national gross domestic product (GDP) is only 13.94% (2013-14).
