In the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, McNabney et al report their study of the types and amount of chronic medical illness among, and medications required by, assisted living (AL) residents. Almost half of the AL residents in their study had chronic Conditions in 3 or more different general disease categories and one fourth had 2 or more specific conditions covered in Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG). Other than living in larger facilities, no other features distinguished the facilities where these residents lived.
