By applying the theory of gearing and the concept of differential geometry, this investigation presents a mathematical model for a spur gear pair with pinion involute teeth and gear cycloidal teeth. The mathematical model is used to examine the computer graphs and to perform tooth contact analysis (TCA) of the proposed spur gear pair. Although cycloidal gears do not induce kinematic errors under the ideal meshing condition, kinematic errors are induced when two mating cycloidal gears mesh with each other under center distance variations. TCA results indicate that the kinematic errors of the gear pair with pinion involute teeth and gear cycloidal teeth is very sensitive to the radius of cycloidal gear generating circle. Analysis results also reveal that choosing a smaller generating circle leads to a parabolic transmission curve and a smoother transmission without jumping. In addition, the kinematic errors of the proposed gear pair are reduced substantially.
