This study establishes an innovative integrated semantic analysis and term segmentation and word segmentation system method of English patents. The new system method applies the semantic analysis method of the study to extract keywords of components and technical/functional terms, and also applies a newly established English concordance from English patents. Using the appearance times of keywords and times of normalization concept, word groups are established in this study. This paper makes technical/functional analysis of the related light-emitting diode (LED) English patents from the studies about the integrated LED structure manufacturing technique, substrate polishing technique, substrate testing technique and substrate cleaning technique, as well as the trend of research and development (R&D) activities of main competitors. According to the established term segmentation and word segmentation methods of patents in English, first search for the associated light emitting diode English Patents, and having referred to LED-related engineering knowledge books and LED-related patents in English, the study draws an LED material list, and further categorizes technical and functional hierarchies in a branch-shaped structural diagram. Furthermore, this study semi-automatically and semi-manually carries out technical and functional analysis of the related English patents mentioned above, thus further constructing technical/functional matrix of the related English patents more rapidly. After application of the established technical/functional matrix, a technique-based core competitiveness chart of competitors can be subsequently established. This paper also develops a probability method and equation to judge a LED English patent belonging to a technical category and a verification is made. Then, this paper establishes a competitors' core competitiveness diagram, with companies on column side, IPC code on row side and number of patents as the elements; and also establishes a main competitors' R&D trend diagram, with companies on column side, years on row side and number of patents as the elements. The relative LED English patents search results can be provided to the LED-related customers to understand the core competitiveness of its competitors, and customers develop new patents for reference.
