Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in an elderly Chinese population: a community-based cross-sectional study.

To the Editor: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors that promotes the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is associated with all-cause mortality. With increasing worldwide prevalence, MetS represents an enormous economic burden and is considered a serious public health problem. Recent studies have revealed that MetS is prevalent within the elderly population.
